What rules should I consider when choosing a domain name?

Here, we have compiled a summary list of the rules you should consider when choosing a domain name.  Note that rules other than the ones listed here might also apply for some extensions.

.com, .net, and .org extensions

  • You can only use alphanumeric characters as well as the hyphen.
  • A domain name cannot begin with or end in a hyphen.
  • The length should be maximum 63 characters and cannot include .com, .net, and .org.

.info extension

  • You can only use alphanumeric characters as well as the hyphen.
  • A domain name cannot begin with or end in a hyphen.
  • The length should be maximum 63 characters and cannot include .info.

.biz extension

  • You can only use alphanumeric characters as well as the hyphen.
  • A domain name cannot begin with or end in a hyphen.
  • A domain name cannot contain two contiguous hyphens.
  • The length should be minimum 3 and maximum 63 characters and cannot include .biz.

.name extension

  • You can only use alphanumeric characters as well as the hyphen.
  • A domain name cannot begin with or end in a hyphen.
  • A domain name cannot contain two contiguous hyphens.
  • A domain name must include a first name and a last name (firstname.lastname.name.)
  • The first name should be minimum 1 and maximum 63 characters.
  • The last name should be minimum 3 and maximum 63 characters.

.cc extension

  • You can only use alphanumeric characters as well as the hyphen.
  • A domain name cannot begin with or end in a hyphen.
  • A domain name cannot contain digits only.
  • The length should be minimum 3 and maximum 47 characters and cannot include .cc.

.org.uk and .co.uk extensions

  • You can only use alphanumeric characters as well as the hyphen.
  • A domain name cannot begin with or end in a hyphen.
  • The length should be minimum 3 and maximum 23 characters and cannot include .org.uk and .co.uk.

.tv extension

  • You can only use alphanumeric characters as well as the hyphen.
  • A domain name cannot begin with or end in a hyphen.
  • The length should be maximum 63 characters and cannot include .tv.

.ws extension

  • You can only use alphanumeric characters as well as the hyphen.
  • A domain name cannot begin with or end in a hyphen.
  • A domain name cannot contain digits only.
  • The length should be minimum 4 and maximum 63 characters (excluding .ws) and cannot include .ws.
