What is bandwidth?

Back to the main help page

Bandwidth is an expression referring to the amount of data transfer.  In the computer world, the amount of data is measured in terms of "bytes."  A byte, in most computer systems, is equivalent to a Latin alphabet.  For example, the letter A consumes one byte of memory to store for a computer.

While data is transmitted between your site and the visitors, a certain amount of data is sent from the visitor's computer to your site, and your site sends back some data in response.  Your site's bandwidth usage is the amount of these data transfers in terms of bytes.  Usually, bandwidth is measured in pre-determined time spans, like weekly or monthly.  You should note that bandwidth usage for a site includes all the data transmitted during a visit from the site, sending and receiving e-mails, using chat services, and so on.
